Back-Link Generation Methods - An Analysis Of The Pro's & Con's:

Article Submission

Writing articles is universally acknowledged as an excellent but time-consuming method of generating quality back-links. Most people do a combination of manual and automated article submission. Manual submissions to high-PR sites give good quality back-links but are incredibly time-consuming, as the article needs 'spinning' or re-writing every time to avoid duplicate content issues.

If an automated submission system is used, then those that don't provide automated article rewriting are essentially worthless for the same reason. Those that do provide this option experience varying degrees of success - depending on the technique used. There are one or two very good automated and auto-rewriting article submission services (we use one extensively ourselves as part of our on-going SEO efforts,) but this still requires the writing of many genuine articles per week and then 'spinning' them several times. Using a ghost-writer reduces time - but adds more cost - and needs very tight quality-controls in our experience.

Trying to achieve any kind of real volume via article writing means you have to use an automated service - and you would normally need to submit at least 3-4 articles per week minimum to get good results - which is an awful lot of work if you spend 2-3 hours writing and then spinning each one.

N-Way Linking Networks

Another very popular and tested system is to subscribe to an opt-in link network. This involves placing a small active program on a new page on your website. This page will then contact a database of all its members and dynamically create links between them all. Modern networks get away from reciprocal linking (or link-swapping) and use complicated algorithms to create loops of links (3-way & 4-way are the most common) to try and deceive the search engines and create the illusion of inbound-only links.

Link networks DO work - but can be very limiting. Depending on how many people they have in their network they usually build to 200-300 total back-links over several months. 'Gradual' can be good for search engines - but they stop too soon and don't create constant on-going fresh new links (what the search engines really love) - although some cycle their links regularly to try and counteract this to some degree. The main down-sides are that they don't allow sites that are not yet indexed in Google - so you can't use the system to get you indexed in the first place. Also, the amount of links is severely limited and generally stops growing after 3-6 months. Plus, one completely overlooked fact is that you are hosting the same amount of outbound links from your site to the other member sites - thus giving up some of your valuable Page Rank 'juice'. However, this does remain one of the better ways of getting semi-permanent inbound links via a broad IP-spread (and again, we use this method ourselves.)

Blogging

Creating your own blogs is yet another popular and highly successful way of creating inbound links - but these, more than anything else require huge amounts of time to build, administer and keep fresh. Posting new content either involves constant writing or out-sourcing/ghost-writing content. If you create automated feeds then you always have to manage them individually to some degree (involving editorial checks & spam control etc.) You need to ensure 'spinning' and re-writing of all the articles to avoid duplicate content issues, and creating more than a large handful of blogs becomes too time-consuming. Our first blog network of only 50 sites took hours and hours to administer - and that was before we went Multi-IP-Class!

This is by far and away the most expensive of all systems, as it involves purchasing many URL's, different servers and hosting plans (to avoid restricted IP's) and a lot of admin. Don't believe what some people will tell you - that only 10-20 will be sufficient; to make blog networks work you need a LOT more than that.

Social Media Posting

Web 2.0 has really caught on over the last two years, and great gains can be achieved by an aggressive inter-linking campaign via many of the major social networks. This has the advantage of being relatively low-cost (or even free,) but takes enormous amounts of time to administer. In our experience, you have to be very careful not to get caught up in the wave that is Web 2.0 and spend all your time generating 'chatter' - with no sales or subscription results!

Reciprocal Linking (Link Swapping/Exchanges)

The 'original' way of getting back-links to your site: Simply swap links with another web-master and you've both created an inbound link, right? Wrong! Google and all the search engines are known to look for reciprocal linking and they effectively cancel each other out. This is why the linking networks have gone 3, 4 or 5 way. (That's why we call them N-Way networks - as the number they use is an indication of how many steps are required before they reciprocate back to the original site.) To all intents and purposes, this method is dead and a waste of time. It may be worth having some reciprocal links (especially if the other site has a higher PR than yours,) but the time required to manage the swapping generally far outweighs any real benefits.

So... How Does Our System Work?

We have a HUGE content network which grows by tens of thousands of new pages every month. That's hundreds of thousands of pages per year, spread across hundreds and hundreds of sites (and many different A, B & C Class IP addresses - if you know what that means.) The network currently has in excess of a million discreet web pages.

Membership to our program rents you approx 1,000 new direct links to your pages/sites via the anchor text of your choice EVERY MONTH while you subscribe. That's 1,000 new links freshly created each and every month and seeded into the tens of thousands of pages created. So after 2 months you have around 2,000... After 3 months you have 3,000 etc. While you stay subscribed, your back-links will continue to grow EVERY month - without you lifting so much as a finger (except to notify us of any keyword or URL changes.)

We provide 10 'slots' in our network for our standard subscription of just £37p.m. This means you can promote 10 different combinations of keywords and landing pages, i.e. if you had 2 sites to promote, you could choose a few pages on each and give some of them multiple slots for different keyword phrases. If this sounds confusing, don't worry - we have a simple tutorial which explains this (as well as some basic SEO theory) in more depth HERE - and shows you exactly how to go about picking the best combinations.

Technical Background Bit (For Those Techies, Like Us, Who Are Interested!)

We are NOT a link-farm - we manage a MASSIVE network of content and information sites with NO adsense/advertising etc. anywhere. None of our pages are 'monetised' in any way (to use marketing-speak!)

All the sites are search-engine friendly, fully SEO optimised and full of human-written content which grows daily. And when we say human-written, we don't mean 'comments' or 'signature' files etc. We mean proper, well written, informative articles of hundreds to thousands of words on many different subjects. And your link is not 'spammed' in with hundreds of others on a page. We maintain a strict control of how many links appear on each page and never allow it to go beyond what the search engines like to see - plus each page is a unique content page - with no duplicates.

All pages are added to the respective 'sitemap' for that site and submitted regularly to all the major search engines. This all adds up to the maximum amount of pages indexed in the quickest time. Adding a site into our program will often carry the advantage of getting you indexed in Google and the other search engines very quickly.

WHY Are We Doing This !?!

The simple answer is that we weren't going to originally... We built the network purely for our own use; not to sell to anyone else. It was engineered over time to maximise our SEO efforts alongside all the other methods we use for back-link building (including blogging, article marketing, link networks and Web 2.0 - yes, we use them all - and we recommend you do too if you have the resources.)

But, it became abundantly clear as we developed our technologies, that the size of the network we wanted (to give a high IP spread) would provide many more links than we could personally use. We have around a hundred separate and individual sales websites of our own (each with many landing pages,) but have a comfortable capacity of around 400 places in the system. We've kept back 125 for ourselves, leaving only 275 available. Each place carries 10 'slots' or URL/keyword combinations.

If we were to point all the available slots from our network at our own sites, there would be an unnatural concentration or 'cluster' of IP's being highlighted. By spreading the network's outbound links over thousands of other IP's, we create a completely natural looking environment, which benefits us as well as our subscribers.

And of course, the subscription charge offsets our considerable development, URL, hosting and running costs as well!

But... More to the point:

If you were to calculate the cost of buying 1,000 fresh new inbound text-links from a broker each and every month... It would cost a fortune. If you consider any of the other systems we've covered above, you'll see that they all cost more, both financially and in terms of the time and effort required. Many SEO and promotion systems can become almost full-time jobs in their own right; speak to anyone who's built large quantities of sales websites, and you'll find this to be the case. We've spent a small fortune on salaries for administrators and clerks over the years to manage various promotional activities.

If you consider the huge amounts of time that you can end up putting into website promotion, then you'll quickly realise, as we did, that your most important activities MUST be systemised and as automatic as possible. Looking back over our years in web promotion, if we added up the financial cost of all those hours spent plugging away at article writing, blog building and admin, submissions of all types, promotional site maintenance and PPC analysis and tweaking, it would be scary.

PPC in particular used to be a huge drain on our time. Our in-house PPC guy spent a good 4 hours per day managing, tracking, analysing and creating Google and MSN Ads. We've now cut our budget by almost 90%, and clients we've worked with have slashed theirs by between 60-80% - and reduced time spent to less than 15 minutes per day. That's a huge saving in money and manpower.

The major cost that many web marketers don't consider is the time cost of using up a large percentage of their productive working hours (and many people run their web businesses part-time - so don't have a full working week) on repetitive promotional tasks that really should have systems in place to do them automatically. We have a full-time web developer who is constantly writing and improving systems that ease our workload. If you add up all the hours you spend on doing these jobs and consider how much more money you could be making by freeing up that time to BUILD your business and come up with new ideas, products, partnerships, joint ventures, promotions, content and copy, then you'll frankly be astounded.

There are just too many distractions in business...
It's so easy to put a large chunk of your time into areas that are not making money or building clients!

Our system can vastly reduce the time spent on these activities for only £37 per month. Even at minimum wage, that's only 7 hours per month. That's just over a pound per day to have someone building your web presence at an unprecedented rate.

A couple of years ago, we actually did an analysis of the time and financial cost of our daily business activities and it yielded some astonishing revelations we can tell you - we recommend everyone else should do the same - but the graph shown here details some of the promotional and SEO activities in comparison...

We all need e-marketing systems that are automated, reliable and cost-effective. By using our system,
you can spend your time developing your offers, your products and building your business.

What's Next?

OK... A few quick reality checks and important points:

  • Obviously you need to have realistic expectations. Don't expect to start a new site and rank quickly for 'car insurance' for instance! We can't wave a magic wand - but we can supply you with a constantly growing feed of incoming links which, while you're subscribed to our service, will drive you up the search engines steadily (and in many cases, pretty quickly.) We strongly advise that you don't just use us as your only source of back-links. You need to use other complimentary methods of back-link building too - but our system will hugely compliment (and in nearly all cases - outpace) any other method you choose to use.
  • You honestly need to be in for 3-6 months minimum to start to see the real benefits. This is not a 'catch' - you can cancel before then (and anytime you like) - but Google, Yahoo & MSN etc. will index pages slower than we produce them - and they take time to build the value of these links. SEO, as anyone who knows what they're doing will tell you, takes time. It is not an overnight thing. But a prolonged and considered attack on various keyword phrases will yield superb results over time.
  • Don't keep changing your page/anchor text combinations. In line with the previous comment, we leave the same combinations in place for months and even years. If you want to vary the keyword phrases to certain landing pages, then resist the temptation to change them every month. We will restrict changes to only once per month, as otherwise you will never reap the rewards, but even this is too often. We do this for your own benefit and to ensure network stability - constant changes will only damage your results.
Be aware of dis-information on SEO and web marketing. Many of us realise that there are a lot of people out there trying to separate us from our money. And we all know that a lot of the info that ends up in our mailboxes is blatant 'sales-speak'... Promises of huge payouts, with screen-grabs of gigantic cheques and how some 13 year old has designed a new money making system that he made £100,000 out of last week from his kitchen table... BUT... Are you aware that a lot of the information that's circulated is not only incorrect or exaggerated, but is actually deliberately misleading? If you had a system which honestly made you a million pounds profit every year - how keen would you be to share it with everyone? Sure - you might make another million selling it, but would you really want to give away your hard-earned 'eureka' moments of inspiration which made it all work - or would you keep those titbits back for yourself? Deep down, you know the answer to that. There ARE some reputable and worthwhile sources of web business information out there. You'll get to find them eventually - they're the ones without the hype. (We can point you at them if you like, but it's better you find them yourself, so you've travelled that journey on your own terms.)
  • The entire system is (and HAS to be) completely 'White-Hat' - which is the industry's way of saying that it does nothing that could get you penalised in any way by one of the search engines. We do not use cloaking, spamming or any other 'Black-Hat' technique that would cause problems - otherwise we wouldn't get the results that WE need (remember, we built this for ourselves too.)
Because of all this, we have strict rules on WHO can join the network, as we will not allow the network's integrity to be compromised and affect all our hard work. We will refuse any sites that engage in the following: Pornography, gambling, drug or pharmacy sales, link-spamming or black-hat practices. Our staff will hand-check EVERY page that we are provided to link to. If any page is found to contain or be part of a site that promotes these areas (or anything else obviously illegal) then your site will not be approved for inclusion. If you have no other sites that are suitable then we will cancel your membership. If you're concerned about your site, email us with the URL's and we'll let you know. Don't worry though - we DO have a sense of humour - we're not trying to censor anything - we just need to make sure that everything we include doesn't 'cross the line' and affect everyone else.
